Name Numerology: Calculator, Letter Chart and Example

Name numerology converts letters into numbers to calculate expression, soul urge and personality. With the Pythagorean chart used here, expression includes every letter, soul urge includes vowels and personality includes consonants. The calculator on this page shows all three. These are categories in a symbolic tradition, not a scientifically validated personality assessment.

Pythagorean chart: each letter’s value

The numbers 1 to 9 repeat through the Latin alphabet. This is the modern method commonly called Pythagorean; the name does not establish that Pythagoras created a chart for today’s alphabet. Check each letter so that you do not accidentally leave out middle names or surnames.

Which name should you enter?

To follow this guide’s convention, use your full birth name, including surnames and any particles that belong to it. If you use a current, married or chosen name, keep that calculation separate and label your choice. You do not need to publish your name or provide documents: the tool calculates in your browser.

• Accents: Á, à and  count as A; Ç counts as C.
• Spaces and hyphens: have no numerical value.
• Vowels: this tool uses A, E, I, O and U. It treats Y as a consonant.
• Other alphabets: the chart uses A to Z. Choose and record a transliteration for names in another script; different spellings can give different totals.

Take particular care with letters such as Ł or Ø that do not simply become A to Z after accent removal. The calculator does not fully transliterate every language. A different spelling changes the arithmetic without saying anything about the legitimacy or value of someone’s identity.

Worked example: Maria Silva

This name is used only to demonstrate the method. Convert every letter first and record the unreduced totals:

• MARIA: M(4) + A(1) + R(9) + I(9) + A(1) = 24.
• SILVA: S(1) + I(9) + L(3) + V(4) + A(1) = 18.
• All letters: 24 + 18 = 42; 4 + 2 = 6.

Expression: every letter

The example’s expression number is 6. The calculator adds all letter values before reducing. To study this field on its own, see the expression number calculation. Do not add the birth date to this total: the life path number uses a separate calculation.

Soul urge: vowels only

The vowels in MARIA SILVA are A, I, A, I and A. Their total is 1 + 9 + 1 + 9 + 1 = 21; 2 + 1 = 3. Numerology associates this field with inner motivations. It cannot reveal thoughts someone has not shared.

Personality: consonants only

The consonants are M, R, S, L and V. Their total is 4 + 9 + 1 + 3 + 4 = 21; 2 + 1 = 3. This field is commonly associated with social presentation. It does not measure how other people actually see you.

Check the totals before reducing: 21 from vowels + 21 from consonants = 42 from all letters. If they do not match, check your transcription. This catches arithmetic mistakes; it does not validate the interpretations attached to the numbers.

How are master numbers 11, 22 and 33 handled?

The name calculator stops reducing when the total reaches 11, 22 or 33. For example, SARAH JANE MILLER totals 65, and 6 + 5 = 11. Keeping these values is a convention of this method, not a rule followed by every school of numerology.

Why does another calculator give a different answer?

First compare the spelling, including particles and middle names. Then check the letter chart, the handling of Y and the master-number rule. A tool that counts Y as a vowel can change soul urge and personality while leaving expression unchanged.

If you enter a name without A, E, I, O or U, this tool does not produce a soul urge number. If it contains only vowels, it does not produce a personality number. Missing letters in a category do not imply a missing spiritual characteristic.

Frequently asked questions

Does name numerology change after marriage?

Entering different letters can change the sum. Using the same name and the same chart gives the same result. This does not establish that marriage changes someone’s talents or destiny.

Can I calculate just my first name?

You can, but label it as a partial-name exercise. Do not compare it directly with a result based on every middle name and surname.

Can a number help me choose a baby’s name?

You can explore the symbolism out of curiosity, but it offers no basis for guaranteeing luck, health or success. Cultural meaning, pronunciation and family preferences are concrete factors to consider.

What if I do not know my birth name?

Use the name you have chosen for the exercise and record that choice. No calculation requires you to recover personal records or use a name that makes you uncomfortable.

How do I combine these results with my birth date?
